Don Juan, you

Don Juan, you
‘Don’t trifle with her affections, you Don Juan!’ says a friend to Jos Sedley, in Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, knowing that the fat and ridiculous Jos will be mightily pleased with the description. The original Don Juan was Juan Tenorio of Seville, a seducer of women whose adventures were dramatized in the seventeenth century by Gabriel Tellez. Many other playwrights and poets, such as Lord Byron, made use of the name, turning it into a synonym for ‘ladies’ man’, ‘lover-boy’, or ‘lady-killer’. In A CackHanded War, by Edward Blishen, a man who thinks that the man he is talking to has far too much interest in women as sexual objects says to him: ‘Don bloody Juan!’
